Seven tremors in a week put Segamat on high alert Seven tremors in a week put Segamat on high alert Fire and Rescue Department personnel test a drone for earthquake monitoring in Johor, part of efforts to improve disaster response readiness. Pic courtesy of Johor Fire & rescue Dept SEGAMAT: Seven tremors in a week have shaken the quiet district of Segamat and its surroundings, putting rescue teams on high alert and prompting the use of drones to monitor quake damage. Segamat is a district in northern Johor. While Malaysia lies outside the Pacific Ring of Fire, tremors originating in Indonesia are sometimes felt in southern Johor. Segamat's older shophouses and low-rise housing could be vulnerable to stronger quakes. Its tallest structure, the 21-storey Wisma Lai Hee Sang, towers above mostly wooden and concrete homes. Agriculture and fishing dominate the local economy, and houses are typically built of wood, with some concrete structures. MetMalaysia recorded a 4.1-magnitude quake on Aug 24. Additional tremors were recorded throughout the week, with subsequent magnitudes reported in the 2.7 to 4.1 range. A section of ceiling plaster at a surau collapsed during one tremor. Authorities said there were no injuries. Johor Fire and Rescue Department director Siti Rohani Nadir said its Special Tactical Operation Rescue Malaysia (STORM) unit has been placed on standby following tremors in Segamat and Kluang. The Segamat District Earthquake Disaster Management Committee ordered all rescue agencies, including the department, to activate 24-hour control rooms after the latest tremor struck at 7.29am on Aug 30. Rescue teams will patrol affected areas regularly and report any damage or distress directly to the district committee. "So far, there have been no reports of injuries or major structural damage," she said, adding that patrols were being carried out from two fire stations in Bandar Baru Segamat and Segamat town. A drone unit was deployed to assist local authorities in assessing the first quake site. In anticipation of stronger quakes, 53 STORM personnel in Johor are on standby for mobilisation, while all STORM teams nationwide have also been placed on alert, she added. "We are monitoring developments through MetMalaysia and urge the public to remain calm and follow updates," Siti Rohani said. She reminded residents to take safety precautions, including seeking shelter under sturdy furniture during tremors, stopping vehicles if driving, moving away from buildings after a quake, and reporting any casualties or damage to the authorities. Meanwhile, the Education Ministry has yet to issue a circular on safety measures for schools, said former Kemelah assemblyman Datuk Ayub Rahmat. He said the absence of instructions was worrying, especially after cracks were reported in some government buildings. "This is a disaster management issue and cannot be brushed aside," he said. There are about 120 public schools in Segamat, including 25 secondary schools. The state Education Department has confirmed that no circulars had been issued. Instead, schools were advised to follow MetMalaysia's safety policy on earthquakes.
